Ad-Darr
The One who, in His wisdom, is the sole source of both harm and benefit—nothing afflicts except by His will.
Ad-Darr declares that Allah brings hardship, illness, or distress upon whomever He wills. This name is held in pair with An-Nafi': Allah brings both benefit and harm; both are by His decree. In Surah al-An'am 6:17 He says: 'If Allah touches you with hardship, none can remove it except Him.' The servant who reflects on this name accepts in moments of hardship that the difficulty too is from Allah—they stop blaming others. Illness, loss, diminution—these too are Allah's discipline, a grace that lightens the reckoning on the Day of Judgment.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or sadness afflicts a Muslim—not even a thorn that pricks him—except that Allah erases some of his sins by it.'
