الْعَظِيمُ
Al-'Azim
The One whose greatness cannot be grasped by the mind, possessing infinite majesty and magnificence.
Bakara 2:255
Al-'Azim declares that Allah's magnificence, grandeur, and majesty exceed any measure the human mind can take. In Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) it is said that Allah encompasses the seven heavens and the earth, that preserving them does not weary Him, and the verse closes: 'He is the Most High, the Magnificent.' The servant who reflects on this name notices how small their worldly troubles really are—falling into no anxiety that diminishes Allah for a minor matter. In ruku' the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say 'Subhana Rabbiyal-'Azim' (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent), invoking this name many times a day.
Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Two phrases light on the tongue, heavy on the scale, beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhan-Allahi wa bi-hamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-'Azim.'
