الصَّمَدُ
As-Samad
The One upon whom all creation depends for every need, while He Himself is in need of nothing.
İhlâs 112:2
As-Samad declares that Allah needs no one, while all beings need Him. It is the second verse of Surat al-Ikhlas: 'Allah, the Eternal Refuge' (Al-Ikhlas 112:2). Classical commentators interpret this name as: 'needs stand at His door, where they are filled.' The servant who reflects on this name learns that going to other doors in this world is in vain—every need's final stop is Allah's door. Before asking people, they ask of Him; they seek no remedy before taking refuge in Him.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Surat al-Ikhlas equals a third of the Quran.'
