Surah Al-'Adiyat is the one-hundredth surah of the Quran, comprising eleven verses on humanity's ingratitude toward its Lord, attachment to wealth, and the Day when what is hidden will be brought out. The surah takes its name from the word 'adiyat, the charging steeds of its opening oath. It begins with vivid oaths by horses galloping breathlessly, striking sparks, and raiding at dawn, then declares that the human being is deeply ungrateful to his Lord, and is himself a witness to it. It closes with the reminder of the Day when the contents of the graves are scattered forth and what lies within hearts is laid bare. The surah invites today's reader to weigh the line between blessing and ingratitude, and to balance worldly ambition with the consciousness of the reckoning.
Surah Al-'Adiyat was revealed in the Meccan period, in the early years of the Prophet's mission; although some held it to be Medinan, the prevailing view is that it is Meccan. Its short, rhythmic verses and its opening series of oaths bear the hallmarks of the early Meccan surahs. No reliable occasion of revelation tied to a specific event is known; the surah is a universal statement about human nature.
The surah's main themes are the imagery of its oaths, human ingratitude, and the Day of Reckoning. Verses 100:1-5 paint a vivid scene of war horses charging breathlessly, striking sparks, and raiding at dawn. Verse 100:6, declaring that the human being is profoundly ungrateful to his Lord, is the surah's pivotal statement, and 100:8 names humanity's intense love of wealth. Verses 100:9-11 then turn to the Day when the graves are emptied and the secrets of hearts are exposed, affirming that on that Day their Lord is fully aware of them.
And olsun Allah yolunda koştukça koşanlara
And olsun kıvılcımlar saçanlara
Sabah sabah akına çıkanlara
Ve tozu dumana katanlara
Düşman topluluğunun içine dalanlara ki
İnsan gerçekten Rabbine karşı pek nankördür
Doğrusu kendisi de bunların hepsine şahittir
Gerçekten mala da pek düşkündür
Doğrusu Rableri o gün onların her şeyinden haberdardır
