سورة الهمزة
Surah Al-Humazah is the one-hundred-fourth surah of the Quran, comprising nine verses that condemn those who slander people behind their backs and mock them to their faces, and who hoard wealth as if it guaranteed immortality. The surah takes its name from the word humazah, the habitual backbiter and fault-finder. It announces that such a person, who imagines his wealth will make him eternal, will be flung into al-hutamah, introduced as a kindled divine fire that reaches into the hearts. In an era when gossip, ridicule, and display have become effortless, the surah stands as a pointed warning about the grave spiritual cost of a tongue that tramples human dignity and of arrogance that leans on wealth.
Surah Al-Humazah was revealed in the Meccan period, in the early years of the Prophet's mission. It is read against the conduct of certain leading Meccan polytheists who trusted in their wealth and demeaned the believers with their tongues; some commentaries transmit reports naming specific individuals, but these are not certain, and the surah's judgment is general.
The surah's main themes are the condemnation of backbiting and mockery, the deception of relying on wealth, and punishment in The Hereafter. It opens in 104:1 with 'woe' pronounced upon every slandering mocker; 104:2-3 portray the type who gathers and counts wealth, supposing it will make him immortal. Verses 104:4-9 then describe his being cast into al-hutamah, a kindled fire of God that reaches the hearts and closes over its inhabitants in outstretched columns. The surah joins the ethics of the tongue and the ethics of wealth in a single warning.
