سورة الكافرون
Surah Al-Kafirun is the 109th surah of the Quran; it consists of six verses and addresses uncompromising monotheism alongside freedom of belief. It came as a decisive answer to the polytheists' proposals of compromise in worship: the Prophet is commanded to declare that he will never worship what they worship, nor do they worship what he worships, and the surah closes with 'To you your religion, and to me mine.' Faith, it establishes, admits no bargaining—yet no one is to be coerced into it. Teaching that conviction should be clear while coexistence remains free of compulsion, the surah is a foundational text for Muslims navigating identity in pluralistic societies today.
Surah Al-Kafirun is Meccan. The commentaries report that leading men of Quraysh proposed to the Prophet that he worship their gods for a year while they worshipped his Lord for a year. The surah was revealed in rejection of this compromise, declaring that worship belongs to Allah alone and cannot be blended with anything else.
The central theme is the exclusivity of worship: devotion to Allah cannot be mixed or traded. The repetition of refusal in 109:1-5 underscores that this separation is a permanent principle, not a passing stance. Verse 109:6—'To you your religion, and to me mine'—is among the most quoted lines of the Quran, capturing both purity of faith and the absence of compulsion in religion. The surah shows that a believer can hold a clear identity while living alongside people of other convictions.
Reports describe the Prophet reciting Surah Al-Kafirun together with Surah Al-Ikhlas in the sunnah prayer before fajr and in the prayer after tawaf, and recommending its recitation before sleep. Some narrations characterize the surah as a declaration of dissociation from polytheism.
