Surah Al-Masad is the 111th surah of the Quran; it consists of five verses and addresses the end of obstinate hostility to faith. It pronounces the ruin of Abu Lahab—the Prophet's own uncle and yet his fiercest enemy—together with the wife who aided his hostility; he is the only contemporary of the Prophet condemned by name in the Quran. The surah makes starkly clear that wealth and earnings cannot rescue anyone from divine justice, and that kinship confers no privilege against faith. Commentators also note it as one of the Quran's predictions: revealed while both were alive, it foretold that they would die without believing, as indeed they did. For today's reader it stands as a forceful warning on the transience of wealth and status.
Surah Al-Masad belongs to the early Meccan period. According to the well-known account, when the Prophet gathered his close kin at the hill of Safa to warn them, his uncle Abu Lahab answered him with abuse, and the surah was revealed in response. It is among the earliest surahs marking the beginning of the public call to Islam.
The surah's central theme is that no worldly means can save one who persists in denial and enmity. Verses 111:1-3 pronounce Abu Lahab's destruction: his wealth and all he earned avail him nothing, and a blazing fire awaits him. Verses 111:4-5 include his wife, depicted as the carrier of firewood—an image interpreted both as her spreading slander to kindle strife and as a portrait of her state in the Hereafter. Complicity in wrongdoing, the surah teaches, carries its own accountability.
