سورة التين
Surah At-Tin is the 95th surah of the Quran, comprising 8 verses. It declares that the human being was created in the finest form, sets out the fates of those who guard that honor and those who squander it, and affirms the certainty of divine judgment. Opening with oaths by the fig, the olive, Mount Sinai, and the secure city of Mecca, it announces: 'We have certainly created man in the best of stature.' Yet, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, the human being is returned to the lowest of the low. The surah ends with the question 'Is not Allah the most just of judges?' — compressing into eight verses the bond between human dignity and human accountability. For its brevity, it stands among the Quran's densest statements on the worth of the human being.
Surah At-Tin is Meccan, dated to the early years of the Meccan period. The commentaries explain its oaths as evoking the sacred geography of revelation: the fig and the olive recall the blessed lands, Mount Sinai the place where Moses received revelation, and the secure city is Mecca. No specific occasion of revelation has been transmitted.
Its main themes are the dignity of the human being in creation, the guarding of that dignity through faith, and the inevitability of judgment. The phrase 'the best of stature' (95:4) declares that the human being was fashioned in the finest constitution of body and spirit; the fall to 'the lowest of the low' (95:5) shows that this honor does not preserve itself. The promise of an unfailing reward for those who believe and do righteous deeds (95:6) keeps the door of hope open. The closing question, 'Is not Allah the most just of judges?' (95:8), confronts the denial of the religion with its own incoherence.
